It’s the start of a new year, luckily some of the best things age well. While thoroughly impressed with some of the events of the last year, I have most, unfortunately, run out of my Stranahan’s Blue Peak that made an exquisite tasting Q4 I’ve had for 2024.

Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfurt, KY offers visitors a wonderful tour through Americas longest continuously operating distillery. The air smells of 200+ years of flavors and history.

Behind the Still

The Whiskey Rebellion - Whiskey production in the United States began in the 18th century and grew fast, leading to the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 because of a tax on whiskey. After Prohibition, which ended in 1933, bourbon was officially recognized by Congress in 1964 as a distinct American whiskey, solidifying its cultural significance.

Whiskey Culture

  • Ingredients

    • 2 oz bourbon or rye

    • 3/4 oz honey

    • 1/2 oz lemon juice

    • 1 orange slice

    • 1/4 tsp freshly grated cinnamon

    • 1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg

    • 2 whole cloves

    • 5 oz hot water

  • Instructions

    • Bring water to a boil.

    • Meanwhile, add whiskey, spices, honey, lemon and orange to a ceramic mug or heat-tempered receptacle.

    • Top with water, stir and enjoy.
